Week 12 AF Top 25
AF TOP 25 – Once again, On The Rox, 2016 Pro Bowl team out of the Fantasy Addicts is the number one team in the Association. Suffering a 343-311 upset loss to #21 Orange Lantern Corp, On The Rox dipped down from last week’s high percentage of .850 to a Week 12 VsL of 90-17-1/.840 and the Lanterns benefited from the victory by climbing 6 spots to number 15 overall. Both teams are coached by AF Registered Coaches, On The Rox by Rox, and Orange Lantern by Dan “The Polish Rifle” Mayhoff.
The rest of the top 5 saw a bit of movement from the Week 11 edition. The Fantasy Circus‘s Mighty Pats are still in 2nd overall with a VsL of 101-38-1/.730 but The Dixie League‘s Sanford Celeryfeds are challenging, moving from a part of a 3-way tie for 3rd, into 3rd all alone with a .720 percentage. Gig City KnightHawks, eliminated in Round 1 of the Fantasy Circus are right behind them in 4th, tied with the Andalusia Arrows, also from The Dixie, and making their first appearance inside the top 5, both teams posting a .700 VsL percentage. The IFFL‘s Cardiff Crusaders, part of that 3-way tie for 3rd last week, drop out of the top 5 and down to 6th where they are tied with The Dixie‘s New Orleans Black Hats, each team posting .680 for their VsL numbers.
The explanation for The Dixie League teams suddenly emerging in the top 5 has to do with the start of the playoffs in The Dixie, and the way the VsL% is calculated for playoff teams. The Top 25 rankings are based on VsL% (Vs League) and are calculated by dividing for win percentage, a team’s W-L-T record if that team had played every other team in its league each week. Teams that are in the playoffs, have their VsL calculated slightly differently from regular season calculations. Playoff teams’ VsL% is calculated by attributing non-playoff teams with a score of 0 (giving playoff teams an automatic VsL win against non-playoff teams). Playoff wins are given credit as VsL wins over playoff losses even if the score value is lower, and playoff losses are given credit as VsL wins over lower scoring losses. Playoff BYEs are counted as a win with the VsL value equal to the team’s seeding (ie a #1 seeded playoff bye, counts as a win vs all other teams in the league; a #2 seeded BYE counts as a VsL win vs all teams except the #1 seed, etc). This means teams greatly improve upon their regular season rankings the deeper into the playoffs they go. The Dixie League begins their playoff season in Week 12 with the Eastern and Western League Championship Series, earlier than any other Association League, therefore The Dixie teams shooting to the top of the Top 25 is a bit of an anomaly that will even out as the playoffs in other leagues get underway.
