IFFL solo logoIFFL – For the second week in a row, the Chicago Red Stars have exploded in the IFFL, besting last week’s league high 255 point score with a Week 8, 275 point outing in their defeat of the Perth Panthers.  The score ranks 5th all time in league history and propels Chicago to a 4-4 record for third place in the North Division.  The problem for the Red Stars is that they trail division rivals Cardiff and Venice who are also having tremendous seasons.

The #2 Venice Killerwhales are now 6-2 after defeating Mexico City 231-149, but haven’t been able to overtake the Cardiff Crusaders who also advance to 6-2 after squeaking by the New Orleans VooDoo 161-142.  Cardiff is #1 in the league and was tied for 3rd overall in the Association on last week’s AF Top 25.  The two will meet in a showdown in Week 11 – Venice won their Week 2 match.

In the South Division, the Cape Town Broncos regained their lead on the division after defeating the Claymores 234-180.  Perth’s loss to the Red Stars means they fall into second place with an equal 5-2 record to the Broncos, while the VooDoo are running a close third place in division.  The Panthers and Broncos have their own showdown scheduled in Week 10.

Cardiff, Venice, and Chicago have all outscored all of the South Division teams so far this season.  The IFFL‘s new playoff format for 2016 means this:  if the playoffs were to begin this week, Cardiff and Capetown would get in through Division Championships; Venice would receive the Standings Wild Card spot, and Chicago would get the Points Wild Card spot.  In that scenario, Cardiff would play Cape Town and Venice would play Chicago.  Chicago beat Venice in the teams’ Week 1 meeting and will face each other again in Week 10; Cardiff will play Cape Town for the pair’s only game in the Week 13 finale.  With 5 weeks to go in the regular season, no team has yet to be eliminated from playoff contention.
