IFFL – The Hawaiian Beach Bums proved they were no bums, becoming the second of the IFFL‘s 5, 2017 expansion teams to hit pay dirt in the win column, doing it against the first of the new squads that posted a victory, beating the Los Angeles Dragons 200-182 in Week 2.  The Dragons, forced to use their backup QB for the match, tried to mount a Monday night comeback, but receiver Golden Tate couldn’t save them from the loss.  Both teams are now 1-1 while the league’s other expansion franchises all sit winless at 0-2 each.

The Melbourne Maulers suffered a narrow loss, 176-156 at the hands of league powerhouse Cardiff Crusaders, and the Istanbul Lions were were utterly destroyed 159-88 by a Perth Panther squad that proved to be the bigger cats this week.  The Tigers of Kuala Lumpur were hexed and vexed by a New Orleans VooDoo squad that posted the highest score of the week in the 212-169 trouncing.  The wins allowed Perth and New Orleans each to even their records at 1-1, while Cardiff is, predictably, 2-0.  The Crusaders were last season’s North Division Champions and regular season scoring leader.  Cardiff’s biggest rival, the Scottish Claymores currently hold control of the new Europa Division, with an edge on points and their own 2-0 record after defeating the newly relocated Rochester Grizzlies 201-147.

Perhaps the biggest match of the week was the game that saw the 2016 League Runner-Up Chicago Red Stars taking on the 2015 Champion Venice Killerwhales.  Chicago entered last season’s playoff format as the Standings Wild Card before advancing to the Championship, while Coach Blueshoes’ Venice squad fell just 8 points short of securing the Points Wild Card slot for the post season; even this early in the season, lots were at stake in this early meeting between league juggernauts.  Both of these AF Registered Coaches had a lot riding on the Atlanta-Green Bay game, and by the end of it, Dan “The Polish Rifle” Mayhoff’s Stars had secured a narrow lead with the 149-144 score.  They put up another 17 points in garbage time on MNF for a final 166-144 victory and a 2-0 hold on the Americas Division, while Venice falls to 1-1 and third overall in Europa.
