World League Adds Two; Has Wild Preseason Trading Period
WORLD LEAGUE – The Association’s old-line dynasty league, the WFL welcomes two new franchises into the league for the 2017 season after losing both Dragon franchises this year and after two consecutive seasons with a 100% rate of returning teams. The 2015 World Champion Los Angeles Dragons jumped ship to the rival IFFL with league officials being relatively muted in their response to the controversial poaching of one of their star attractions, instead, granting a team to one of the winningest coaches in the Associtation, Rox, who will take over the Dragons’ roster and debut his Cali Rox in the 2017 season. Also gone is perennial last place Barcelona, the World League‘s other Dragon franchise, replaced by the Milan Wild Boars who have been trying to get a franchise in the WFL for the past couple of seasons.
With the two new franchises in place, the World League kicked off their preseason trading period in July, and things remained relatively quiet through that month. But in August, New Orleans and Dublin Bay kicked off trading with a big-ticket swap, the Acadians giving up Alshon Jeffry and their 2017 first round pick to the Prawns in exchange for running back Ty Montgomery and a second rounder. In all, it was the most active trading period to date for the World League which allows teams to trade personnel and draft picks in the preseason before their keepers are named for the upcoming season. This year, seven trades were executed, more than ever before, and it was also the first year ever that the League’s rule allowing teams to make a counter offer on trades was used. There was a whole slew of counter offers, in fact, as three teams, New Orleans, Dublin Bay, and 2016 Defending Champion Dacusville got into a bidding war for the rights to the Buenos Aires Blue Dogs’ tight end Travis Kelce.
The Blue Dogs must’ve felt like the prettiest girl at the dance as the price was ultimately driven up from the initial offer of a 7th to 8th round swap to the final deal inked between Dacusville and Buenos Aires that sent the projected #2 tight end to the Devils in exchange for pick #2.12 in the 2017 draft. Defending Champion Dacusville was particularly aggressive in seeking out trades this season, as were Dublin and rookie Milan. We’ll see how well that helps their roster when the sixth annual draft for the World League – a slow running email draft – kicks off on the morning of Monday, August 28, as Milan makes their WFL debut with the number one overall pick; Cali Rox will take there first ever World League step at pick #1.10.
