VooDoo, Whales in International Championship
IFFL – Finding themselves as unlikely championship contenders, the New Orleans VooDoo (5-8-0 (1-0) 2687) will face the AF Pro Bowl nominee and 2015 Eastern Division Champion Venice Killerwhales (9-4-0 (1-0) 2975) in the International Fantasy Championship in weeks 16 and 17. The VooDoo lost into the playoffs with their losing record based on the IFFL’s Divisional playoff format, on the heels of a week 13 loss to Mexico City. But with voodoo dolls and pagan rituals they came out in the first half of their playoff rematch with the Warriors and posted a monster 259-132 lead at the break. They finished them off 422-375 to advance to the title game as a 7 point underdog by current projections.
The expansion Venice franchise filled the opening left by the departure of the 2014 Champion Mali Eagles, and the Killerwhales could be on their way to capturing their own title. They fought Mediterranean rival Greek Wonders for control of the division all season, first beating them in week 7 at the start of a 6 game run, then losing to them in a whale-slaughter in week 12. In the week 14 first half of the match, Venice took a 35 point lead into the break, despite Greece scoring on 5 Russel Wilson TDs. The Killerwhales never looked back from that lead, and finished the Wonders’ season with their 475-400 victory.
It is the first championship appearance for both teams and their second ever meeting. Venice won their first match-up 239-163 in week 6.
