IFFL – Ending a 5 game win-streak and advancing a 4 game streak of their own in the IFFL, the Venice Killerwhales came up huge in a Week 8 massacre of the AF#1 Los Angeles Dragons, slaying them 258-133.  Led by a monster 49 point defensive outing that included a pair of defensive touchdowns and a shut out, along with 51 points from their lead halfback, Coach Blueshoes’ Whales scored 12 total touchdowns and put up 567 yards through the air plus another 524 rushing and receiving yards.  The 258 points is good enough to to reach #13 on the IFFL’s All-Time Single Game Scoring Record, displacing their own 256 point performance from Week 12 of 2016.

Venice will advance to a 5-3-0 record with the win, while Joey Drakor’s Los Angeles franchise gets a 2 in the loss column to go to 6-2-0, although they will remain in first place in the Americas Divsion and overall in the league, despite the loss, and despite the anemic performance, will remain the #1 scoring franchise in the league with 1550 total points this season.  Right behind them, with 1513 season points, the AF#5 New Orleans VooDoo took care of Istanbul, 169-94 to progress to 6-2-0 as well and extends their win-streak to 3 games.  The Dragons and VooDoo have a much anticipated Week 9 match-up that the entire Association will likely be paying attention to based on the teams’ high spots on the AF Top 25.  Waiting for one of them to slip up in the Americas Division, the Rochester Grizzlies are just one game behind, with a 5-3-0 record after 193-167 victorty over Kuala Lumpur.

The Killerwhales’ win, sets up a showdown in the Europa Division for Week 9 as well between Venice and the AF#12 Scottish Claymores who destroyed their rival Cardiff, 169-90.  Both teams now sport a 5-3-0 record, although Scotland has outscored the Whales by over a hundred points so far in 2017 and sits at #3 in the league in total scoring, just 11 points back from New Orleans.  The Crusaders fall to 4-4-0 and will face the 3-5-0 Lions of Istanbul in Week 9.

In the league’s new Pacific Division, the 2016 South Division Champion, league powerhouse Perth Panthers put up big numbers as well in a 222-144 victory over Chicago.  The win extends the 2-6-0 Red Stars’ losing streak to 6 games, and advances Perth to a 4-4-0 record to tie up the division with the expansion Hawaiin Beach Bums who defeated Melbourne 185-167 in a hard fought win.  Hawaii is now 4-4-0 as well, and will take their turn at Chicago in Week 9.  The Panthers and Tigers will do battle next week as will the Grizzlies and Maulers in a pair of mascot-perfect match-ups.  Four weeks of the Regular Season remain, and after next week’s marquee match-ups of Los Angeles vs New Orleans and Scotland vs Venice, the playoff picture should begin to emerge.
