Berlin Chosen to Host 2018 IFFL Championship

IFFL – Berlin, Germany has been selected as the host site for the week long 2018 IFFL Championship Exposition, beating out competing bids from Sydney and Miami.  The selection marks the Championship’s return to Europe for the first time since 2015 when it was held in Paris.  The announcement was made at the league’s annual black tie awards gala with representatives from all three potential sites in attendance as well as delegations from all of the league’s 12 teams.

As part of the annual event, the 2017 IFFL Champion Perth Panthers were honored with a duplicaste Crystal Globe Award being unveiled for display at league headquarters, the original having been presented in Perth in January.  Accepting the honors, Panthers’ Coach C used the oppurtunity to thank the staff of both the Association as well as the League, and also the fans all over the world.  He also tipped his hat to the competition, saying, in part, “I would also like to thank Coach Blueshoes and his team from Venice for a terrific, and hard fought contest.  When you took down the AF#1 Los Angeles Dragons, we knew we were up for a fight.  You did a great job Coach, falling only one quarterback short of your second champiampionship in 3 years.  This is a tough league, Coach, and I expect a classy team like Venice to bounce back and challenge again in 2018.”

Also honored were the 2017 Los Angeles Dragons who added the league’s Black Globe Award for being 2017’s regular season points leader, to their impressive trophy case.  The Dragons made headlines last year when they jumped from the rival World League to the IFFL just two seasons removed from their World League championship.  They then proceeded to take the IFFL by storm, winning 8 of 11 regular season matches – most by monster scores – before sweeping New Orleans in the divisionals before finally being slayed by Venice in the semis.  In acceptinhg the award, Coach Joey Drakor promised their southern California fans that they would be back in contention in 2018 as they continued the quest to be the first Association team to win a Championship in two different leagues.

New for the 2017 season, the league presented awards for the regular season’s yardage leaders in the categories of passing, rushing, and receiving as well as one for the total all purpose yardage leader of the three categories combined.  The Rochester Grizzlies who relocated from Mexico City at the start of the 2017 season and then just missed the playoffs, took the Rushing Award with 2865 total rushing yards, while the Scottish Claymores were honored with the Receiving Award for their 3643 receiving yards last season.  The New Orleans VooDoo took home both the Passing Award (6088 passing yards) and the Total Yardage Award for their 11,300 all purpose yards from scrimage.

Following their annual gala, the IFFL’s competition committee will be conveening to propose possible rules changes for the 2018 seasoon.  Expected to be addressed is the quarterback shortage the league’s expansion to 12 teams caused last season as well as establishing a regular season scheduling formula and setting a date and time for the 2018 draft.
