AFFL2023 Update #003: Late Start Update

The AFFL 2023 season – scheduled to start on April 1 has had a delayed start but is now set to open.  Contract, Rules, Calendar, and Other information follows.

First, a couple of announcements.  Coach Josh of the 2020 Champion Tampa Bay Renegades has withdrawn from the league due to life changes not leaving enough time to give the franchise focus; we’ve wished him the best.

The AFFL welcomes TWO NEW OWNERS as Coach Quintin has entered a purchase agreement with the league to take ownership of the dormant Bandits franchise while Coach Seth joins us after putting together a conglomerate to move the Renegades franchise away from Florida.  The league welcomes both of them as they take over franchises that could be immediately successful. Coach Quintin has played for many years in what was once my Legion of Defense all defense league and is now Showboats’ Coach Shane’s league; Coach Seth enters the league on recommendation of Panthers’ Coach Byron. (Garrett, can you send them the Slack invites, please?)

Ok, on to important contract management stuff…..

AFFL League DATABASE

  • The NEW AFFL League DATABASE replaces the old League Contract Datasheet
    • This is the View-Only version of my master league database
    • I fixed the viewing problems I mentioned in earlier emails, and all of those old links I sent are now obsolete
    • I’ve done away with the old “Contract Info Page” on the AF website where miniature versions of the spreadsheets were embedded into the website…instead….
    • The Full spreadsheet/database can be accessed/viewed at the above link,  and there are buttons and links for it all over the AF site (“AFFL League DATABASE” or “Contract Database” or “DATABASE”…..some version of database) I’ll post a link on the MFL site in the useful links section also
  • This has the MASTER contracts for all players, you can view them sorted by team, player, or total value
    • There are a few glitches – namely, the data for length and bonus totals don’t show up, but the data is actually there, it just doesn’t show up (it shows on your individual team data sheets though…..I’ll get that fixed
    • also there’s some formatting issues…no big deal….on the payment calendar
    • otherwise no glitches
  • It also has the MASTER for all Dead  Money Charges
    • I’m still finishing updating this data, so all Dead Money shows as 2023 charges….HOWEVER these are actually 2022 charges, once all the data is done being entered, I’ll archive those charges to 2022, and 2023 will show $0 for all teams except for prior commitments/charges
  • In the future, there will be other tabs in the database – 1 for franchise tag records, one for taxi info, one for auction info, etc…..I’ll build it as I go, but this one will be continuous and won’t have to be rebuilt each year like the first one (two, actually) I originally made
  • It’s big and heavy and takes a while to load, so bear with it.  this will be your go to place mostly for league-wide info, for dealing with your own contracts, it will be more convenient to go to your own team page/book (see below)

AFFL Team Databook

  • The NEW Team Databook replaces the old AFFL Team Contract Datasheet and I’ve set it up a little different…..
    • there’s a main spreadsheet with individual tabs for each team (just like the old one), but  ALSO…….
    • There are INDIVIDUAL BOOKS for each team…….(..all of it is linked directly to the master database…….I’m thinking this will make it easier for y’all to view your data)
    • The very first tab of the Team Databook (where you land when you click the link)   is labeled  “Team Databooks” and it’s a menu with links (the links are weird, you have to click on the link, then click again on the url that pops up):
      • On that page/tab, there’s a link/button to the main League DATABASE and also a link to the MFL Rosters Page
      • There’s a link for each individual team and this link brings you to a new spreadsheet book, just for that individual team
      • (the link “Full Team Databook” links to itself…..but the same menu is in each individual team data book, so it will link back to the full book with all the teams)
    • THIS IS STILL BEING BUILT……..I’m going through transitioning it team by team….maybe a third of the way through.  If you click the link and check the menu when it loads, if your team is linked, your page is done.
    • The spreadsheet/databook can be accessed/viewed at the above link, and there are buttons for it all over the AF site (“AFFL Team Databook” “Team Data”.etc) I’ll post a link on the MFL site in the useful links section also
  • Everything is linked directly to the main database
  • NOTE: Once TAXI rules are updated, the TAXI section will be added to each team page
  • The layout may take some getting used to, but I think everyone’s going to love it.  These pages will show all of your team financial info and all info on contract players…..other sections may be added in the future……I can change some of the layout and formatting if you need/want, so ask, if it’s an easy change I can do so.

League Calendar

  • The League Calendar has now been updated to adjust for the late start
  • the Spring Signing Period will now open on Monday, May 15 and will run until Sunday June 18
    • During Spring signing you can sign new contracts, extend, restructure, etc
    • I’ve gotten rid of all the old contract forms, we can do it all by email….some time next week i should be caught up enough to email out a list of guidelines for what info I need for each contract move, etc
  • The FA  Auction is now set to begin on Monday June 26 and will end as previously scheduled on July 23
  • No other changes were necessary

Contract Rules

  • Contract Rules are nearing finalization and will be done by the end of the week…or Mondayish.
  • By the end of next week, I’ll try to put out a rules guide that outline the changes, etc
  • I’ve updated the layout with color-coding, so if you haven’t checked them out yet, I think you’ll find them easier to follow (in a way, this is the biggest change…it really makes it easier to see the different contract types and their different rules, etc)
  • NOTE: Franchise tag rules have been moved to the League Rules
  • NOTE:  2022 Rookies can be signed to Rookie contracts this spring, but that rule is changing and they will be the last class allowed to do so, future rookie contracts can only be signed by true rookies

Other Rules

  • I’m going to work on getting the taxi rules updated asap so you can manage your rosters  (eta…2 weeks, maybe?)
  • No other big rules updates expected…..a couple of small ones I think everyone will like)
  • Contract Committee will release the 2023 Prize Money schedule soon, also
  • NOTE: the FB position is being eliminated

Salary Cap and MFL

  • I will begin updating MFL next week….I have to import rosters, let the system set new prices, then cycle salaries and contracts on the contract players manually for each one
  • Once that’s all done, I can figure this year’s salary cap…..
  • Salary Cap
    • I’ll give you ‘preliminary’ salary cap and cut cap numbers as soon as I have it updated enough to run them
    • these ‘Preliminary’ numbers will be the caps according to our existing league rule formula
    • The comp commt is going to discuss potentially adding a bench spot and/or lowering the formula for the salary and/or cut caps, so this “preliminary’ number may change
    • I’ll try to get the numbers finalized by the end of May
