AFFL Season Update #005: Odds and Ins

Some random odds and ins to keep you updated on:

  • First, I’d like to welcome Diego to the league as the new owner of the Stars.  The league’s most traveled franchise…..founded in Atlanta in 2019, the franchise first relocated to Southern Cross, Australia, then moved literally around the world to Venice Italy, and now completes a complete global circumnavigation to set up a new fanbase in Guatemala.  Diego won the championship in his first year in my old Justice League, and last year he won the championship in his first year in my World League.  I’m hoping it takes him a little time to learn the ins and outs of our league before he starts to dominate all of us.  Welcome to the family, Diego.
  • Hosting Fees: Our 2022 hosting fees have been paid from the LeagueSafe account.  Our annual hosting fees from MyFantasyLeague have always been $69.95……..the actual fee is $89.95 but they give us a $20 discount for paying before Aug……beginning this year, they have raised their rates.  They now charge $99.95, and offer 2 different early bird discounts ($20 and $30) We’ve paid early enough for the $30 discount, so the price didn’t actually change for us…yet.  We’ll see what they do next year, I have a feeling they’re going to eliminate the $30 discount.
  • Contract Forms – These have been updated, everything should be self explanatory.  I’m talking about the different forms on the Contract Data Page for filing contracts and changes.  Of course, you can also just email me directly with any contract changes/updates – whichever way works best for you.
    • Remember, the Team Data Sheet and the Contract Data Sheet or both on that page too (and also on buttons on the League Page)
    • For the forms, scroll down
  • Cuts – I/we throw around the term “cutting a player” throughout the off-season, and it’s also referenced in the rules…..I wanted to clear up the terminology……….players don’t actually get cut in the offseason until the end, right before Cut Day when rosters get trimmed down to below the Cut Cap.  A lot of times when we’re referring to “cutting players” in the offseason, what we really mean isn’t that we’re cutting them, so much as we’re not keeping them when cut day comes around. It seems like a small distinction, I just wanted to point it out because some teams have emailed me asking how to cut players….players aren’t cut until the end of the offseason, basically; the ones you plan to cut, you don’t have to do anything to right now. (Roster limits and salary cap aren’t in effect right now, so it doesn’t hinder anyone by having the players just sit until Cut Day
  • Off-season settings – there are currently several settings/rules on MFL that are not set in accordance to our league rules…..an example would be that all position limits are currently missing.  This is to facilitate off-season activity.  All settings will be put back in line with the rules before the regular season starts.

Lastly…..and most importantly….

  • I’m a little concerned that there has been almost no contract activityThe deadline is just 12 DAYS from now
  • All contract signings, extensions, restructures, and franchise tags must be in by midnight May 15, there will be no extensions
    • Diego – as a new owner, your deadline is June 10 (45 days after you took ownership – I’ll get with you on details)
  • Players that do not get shielded will go into the free agent auction, no exceptions
  • Get with me if you need help; if you need to, get me a list of the players you want to protect and I’ll lay out your options
  • At the very least, you should be doing the following to manage your roster: (from the 2022 Season Primer)
    • First, look at your roster on the MyFantasyLeague site; take note of your UFA’s (your non-contract players); decide if you want to shield any of them from the upcoming auction by giving them a contract
      • If you decide to give them a contract, keep your contract cap space in mind, look at the Calculating Salaries section of the Contract Rules to refresh your memory on how to set the contract up.
      • Also keep in mind, you can now use Adjustable Rate Contracts
      • If you decide to use a Franchise Tag, note there are new rules that may allow you to get a better rate on the player’s salary
    • Next, look at your contract players either on the myfantasyleague site or on either the Contract or Team Data Sheet; See which contract players you have with a 0 in the years remain column.  These are players with expiring contracts.
      • Decide if you want to extend their contracts and take a look at the Extension Rules (you could also choose to use your Franchise Tag on one of them)
      • If you don’t shield them, these players go into the upcoming auction as UFA’s
    • Third, take a look at your RFA’s, your players with 1 year remaining.
      • You need to decide if you want to shield them from the auction by signing them to an extension.
      • If you do not shield them with an Extension or a Franchise Tag, they will enter the Free Agent Auction as an RFA (and you will have final option against any high bids, or receive compensation)
      • If you do not sign them to an Extension now RFA (1 Year) you can still sign them to an Extension next spring as a ‘Year 0 UFA’ – or and ‘Expiring RFA’
      • Note that there are different salary options and conditions for Year 1 and Year 0 RFA’s when signing them to extensions
    • Next, look at all of your current and future contract commitments and decide if you want to move money around by restructuring any eligible contracts – now is the time to do so.
