AFFL 2022 Update #008: Divisional Alignment Draft; Bandits Franchise

We’re counting down to the Division Realignment Draft, set to start on July 1st.

For a quick rundown/reminder:

  • The four 2021 Division Champions won the right to be the four 2022 Division Captains
  • The Divisions have now been permanently named and retroactively assigned.
  • Each Division Captain will represent the Division they won last season to defend their title, and will take turns picking the teams to fill their division for 2022
  • Division Captains can pick any available franchise from the ‘draft board’ to fill their division
  • Pick order is in order of furthest finish

I’ve got the 2022 Division Alignment Draft Page set up at that link (and there’s also a button for it on the AFFL League Page).  Our four Division Captains in pick order are:

  1. Tracy Bulls – Lombardi Division Champ, advanced to Championship
  2. Sleeperville Outlaws – Paul Brown Division Champ, advanced to semi-final round
  3. Italian Wranglers – Halas Division Champ, did not advance, beat Raiders in 5th/6th place game
  4. NOLA Raiders – Landry Division Champ, did not advance, lost to Wranglers

Just like last year, the draft will be nice and casual….once July 1st hits, the Bulls can email me with their pick, and I’ll update the draft board.  The Division Captains should check the page every couple of days, and when they see they’re on deck, they can email me their pick.  Everyone else can check the page every couple of days to see which division you’ll fall into this season.

Bandits Franchise

We only had 2 franchises not return for the 2022 season – that’s an incredibly good rate for a 20 team league.  The Venetian Stars withdrew (and were replaced by Guatemala City), and the Toledo Bandits never checked in this spring.  I emailed him a couple of times and got no response, so the league moves on.

Frankly, I was way too busy handling contracts and running numbers for teams this spring to invest much time in finding a replacement owner in time to get them up to speed for contracts and the auction.  I do have a coach that’s interested in coming into the league next season, but couldn’t do so this spring……this particular coach is one that I’ve played with for over 10 years and would be very, very interested in getting him into the league – he’s very good, and a great guy (3 of you play against him in another of my leagues, but I’ll keep his identity secret for now)………..

Anyway, because I would much rather wait to let this Coach take on the Bandits next year than to try to find someone this year at this late date in the offseason process.  So, the Bandits Franchise will go under League Conservatorship for the 2022 season.

What that means:

  • The Competition Committee will manage their roster in the following way:
    • Cut personnel to bring roster below the Cut Cap
    • Manage existing contracts (restructures, extensions) where it makes financial sense for the franchise
    • No new contracts will be signed
    • No Taxi moves will be made
  • Their draft will be managed either by the MFL system or by a stand-in coach
  • The MFL system will set the Bandit’s weekly line-up (NOT best-ball format)(MFL uses the Fantasy Sharks Line-Up Coach rankings)
  • The Prize Pool will be a total of $60 less, Competition Committee will decide where to pull that from
  • In the unforeseen possibility that the franchise appears poised to qualify for the playoffs, Competition Committee will decide how to handle the situation

Basically, I think it’s in the best interest of the league to let the team run on autopilot this season to be able to get this coach next year.

As always, email any questions.
