AFFL 2022 Season Update #007 – Auction Update

All 2022 Spring Contract work is processed, all taxi moves processed (NOTE- players can still be put on the A spot throughout the offseason, and 2022 rookies acquired in the draft or during the season on the waiver wire can be put on the B spots if done immediately after acquiring), and I’m almost ready to go on the auction……it will start on Monday, 13Jun @ 0800 EDT.……..BUT, there’s no need to be sitting at your computer waiting, any player nominated has a 5 day timer and the auction will last until July 31.  Sorry there’s been such a delay on this…I really think, in future years, things will run more smoothly and quickly as we all get more familiar with the contracts.  The delay shortens the auction from 56 total days for the RFA and UFA auctions (original calendar) to just 38 days….BUT we have combined the two auctions into one single 38 day auction, and made several other changes to make it a lot more workable than it was last year…and the troublemaker’s gone.

Before I start with the auction update, I want to announce that the Toledo franchise will not be returning and the Bandits players will not be included in the auction,  I’ll update the league on the Bandits’ orphan status in another email later on, but all 19 other franchise’s UFA’s/RFA’s will be included and all franchises are eligible to bid (although many can’t afford to – more on that later).

Also, some teams have emailed me about problems viewing the Team Data Sheets or the League Data Sheets….it’s very important for you to be able to see these data sheets to have a full picture of your team’s finances and personnel status.  They are embedded in the Contract Data Page on the AF website and those links above are the direct links to the spreadsheets, if you have trouble viewing them, let me know so we can figure it out.  You can not properly manage your team’s finances just with the information on the MyFantasyLeague site, particularly in regards to what you can afford to spend in the auction.  Because of the way the auction will have to be set up, since multi year contracts are involved, it is possible and easy to bid more than you can afford, and that will cause serious problems down the line for your franchise.  And don’t forget, you can keep track of personnel moves and important announcements on the League Page where every major email update is linked and also on the League Telex – a sort of league newsfeed.

It should be an interesting auction, a handful of franchises have lots of money available to them, but there are lots of teams with little to no money to spend.  Also, I should draw your attention to 2 very important new rules concerning players signed from the auction…..the Free Agent contract you will sign them to is now 100% guaranteed, that means any future contract years you sign them to, you pay 100% for if you cut them instead of 50% – and the other is a safeguard against overspending…..if a franchise cuts any player acquired at auction on or before cut day of that same year will result in the forfeit of the franchise’s highest draft pick in the upcoming draft. – be sure you have a plan for how you’re going to pay for a player before bidding on them.  You can always Email me with questions throughout the auction.

Ok, so like I said, the 2022 Free Agent Period (Free Agent Auction) will start on Monday morning, I will have a full and complete Auction Guide finished, posted, published and emailed to all of you in the next few hours.  In the meantime, here’s a quick rundown:

  • The 2022 Free Agent List is the list where you will find all players eligible for the auction
    • I’m still building that list, but the link is live and it updates as I go
    • Teams will be making there own nominations this year (max 1 per day) from the players on that list so that only players being bid on will be on the boards
    • Please be sure to see the details on nominating players in the Auction Guide that’s coming as it is possible to make an illegal nomination and there are penalties for that
  • There’s a 5 day timer when a nomination is placed or the high bid changes (nominations count as a bid)
  • Each franchise will have individual auction budgets determined by formula
    • But I cannot stress enough that your budget may not be accurate to what you can actually afford, make sure you have wrap on your teams finances
  • Any player you win, will have to be signed to a Free Agent Contract
    • I will set up the contract as soon as you ‘win’ and all you’ll have to do is email me to let me know how to structure the money (that will make more sense once you see the Auction Guide)…..the point is, the contract must be finalize right away after winning, no waiting to see what happens with your other auctions; each contract must be done before you’re allowed to continue bidding on any other players
  • Once I’m done building the 2022 Free Agent List I will start unloading players from your rosters……
    • All of your UFAs and RFAs, I have to unload from your roster to make them eligible for the auction
    • (Remember, players that aren’t on the list – players that are currently not on any team – will be there and the system will let you nominate them, but you will get a penalty if you don’t stick to the list.)
    • You will each get an email, individually, between now and the start of the auction, with your auction budget and a screenshot of your full roster for comparison to make sure your current players make it back onto your roster after the auction
    • And Monday at 8 eastern, you’ll be free to start making nominations
