Bagels and Grits

SUPER 16 – Halloween weekend brings a Game of the Week in the Super 16 featuring the South and East Division leaders as the South Carolina based AF#11 Birds of Prey (5-2-0) travel to the Big Apple to face Geno’s Jaw Breakers (4-3-0) in a SimulPlay match.   Not just at the top of their divisions, but the Birds and Jaw Breakers are ranked #4 and #6 in the league, respectively, so the match-up should be excellent, even more so being a SimulPlay game with the franchises’ parent organizations, the Falcons and Jets facing off at the same time.  These teams have only faced each other 3 times before, with the first two meetings going back to when the Jets’ franchise was still in Washington, and Birds of Prey came away with victories in each of those contests, but the last time the two played each other was a 207-187 Jaw Breaker victory in Week 13 of 2015.  That was one of just two losses BoP suffered in the 2015 season, the other, a 2 point loss to Indy that put an end to an unbelievable 17 game win-streak.

The Jaw Breakers came away with a victory, 207-187, the last time these teams met, Week 13, 2015. The New York franchise remains undefeated in franchise history when scoring 200 or more points, and have done so already, 4 times this season

The phrase ‘must win’ gets tossed around far too much, but that could very well be the case in this week’s Game of the Week.  The winningest team in Association history, Roger Tripp’s Birds of Prey have acquired a fierce rival within their division in the latest of the League’s Saint franchises, the Who Dat Saints (4-3-0), who won the division away from the Birds last season for the first time in S16 history.  The Who Dats are just one game back from BoP, a head to head last week decided by just a single point, and have a gift match-up this week, facing the winless BEARMINATORS (0-7-0) in another SimulPlay game, giving them a path to take the division lead again should the Birds lose.  On the other side of the equation, the Jaw Breakers have a tenuous hold on the East Division themselves.  Though they’ve got an impressive 4-1 division record, and have beaten the defending Champ Northern Fins (4-3-0) twice already, the Fins have a matching record and can retake the lead with a win and a Jaw Breaker loss.  The Miami franchise plays Steel Curtain (3-4-0) this week, and the Pittsburgh franchise, as well are hoping for a win and a Jaw Breaker loss to take the division lead with their 1-1 split and total points lead against the Jaw Breakers.  The latest line on the Birds-Jaw Breakers game has Birds of Prey installed as severe favorites, but being a SimulPlay game, anything could happen when their parent organizations face off on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the league, the AF#4 SF’s BowMen (5-2-0), who dropped from AF#1 this week after a heartbreaking loss to rival 1 Eye in last week’s Game of the Week, get a SimulPlay against the league 14th ranked Eagle has landed (2-5-0) to try to rebound from last week’s loss, while the AF#7 Arizona Cardinals (5-2-0), at BYE strength this week, will get a second shot at the expansion Bucking Broncs (3-4-0) who delivered one of their two losses this season.   BIGDOGINTEX (3-4-0) and WTF HOUSTON (3-4-0) will have their second showdown of the season, the Dallas Dogs having won the first one on opening weekend, 166-153.  The winner in this Texas Bowl, will put themselves into position to make a run for the division, especially if Birds of Prey and the Who Dats both lose.  Another set of rivals in their second showdown of the season are Motor City (3-4-0) and The Indy-structibles (2-5-0), meeting this week, both attempting to close on the division leader in Cleveland.  Motor City destroyed Indy in their first meeting of 2016, 197-99 in Week 1 and will be hoping for a repeat performance.

1 Eye and the Dawgs have met twice before in the teams’ histories, and have split, each with a win

Practically a Game of the Week as well, will be the game between the new West Division leader, Coach Mac’s AF#10 1 Eye Til I Die (6-1-0) and the North Division front runner, meigzoh’s The Dawg Pound (4-3-0).  This one is already well underway after Thursday’s game, the Dawgs leading 41-36.  The latest line on this one, incredibly has the league #1 Raider franchise listed as 5 point underdogs, so this one should be exciting and close, and from the looks of it, won’t be done until Monday night.
