IFFL – In their debut game in the IFFL, after jumping from the rival World League in a controversial move, the Los Angeles Dragons put on a a show this weekend, posting video game numbers in their 231-144 defeat of the expansion Istanbul Lions.  Led  by the unlikeliest pair of signal callers, the Dragons put up over 120 points from the quarterback position behind the stellar performances of Alex Smith and Sam Bradford who scored a phenomenal 68 and 61 points, respectively.

The Los Angeles Dragons, winners of the 2015 Atlas Trophy as World League Champions, will attempt to become the first Association team to win a championship in two different leagues

Los Angeles, the 2015 World League Champions, came just 20 points shy of making it into the IFFL record books for a single game performance in their league debut with their statement win, while the other league expansion teams did not fair equally as well.  The IFFL’s own 2015 champion, the Venice Killerwhales destroyed the Melbourne Maulers 187-93 in their own show of force, while the 2016 league runner-up Chicago Red Stars easily dispatched parkhallmark’s expansion Kuala Lumpur Tigers 143-82. Hawaii’s Beach Bums ball club, a last minute addition to the league when the IFFL‘s New Zealand franchise withdrew this preseason, suffered a heartbreaking 2 point loss to the Rochester Grizzlies that could be reversed this week on stat corrections.  The Grizzlies are the old Mexico City Warriors franchise who loaded up a convoy of Mayflower moving vans and relocated in the middle of the night this year on the eve of the League draft, sporting new colors and logos for the 2017 season.

The League powerhouse Perth Panthers suffered an opening weekend loss to the Scottish Claymores, 201-141, who posted the second highest score of the week behind the Dragons’ ridiculous numbers, while another perenial contender, the Cardiff Crusaders pulled off a come from behind victory 170-151 over the New Orleans VooDoo behind the QB-WR combo of Rivers and Allen late on  Monday night.  The VooDoo will try to right the ship in Week 2 versus Kuala Lumpur, while things look bleak for Melbourne who must face the Crusaders.  Hawaii will take their turn against Los Angeles in an eastern Pacific show down  while the league’s farthest removed franchises, Perth and Istanbul will meet in a Panthers vs Lions cat fight.  Scotland will face off with the Grizzlies, and in the week’s most interesting match-up, there’s a possible playoff preview as the Red Stars and Killerwhales meet up for the first time this season.
