Super-Draft
Super 16 – The fifth annual Super-16 draft had a great turnout, with 14 of 16 league teams in the room. Adrian Peterson showed he can still get top billing when BIGDOGINTEX took him first overall, ahead of hyped younger players like Odell Beckham and Todd Gurley, who went second and 4th, respectively to the H-Town Foster Kids and The Indy-structibles.
The BEARMINATORS had a ‘karma and a kicker’ moment, showing up late and having Malcom Jenkins auto-drafted for him with the 3rd pick of the draft. The Los Angeles Super Chargers and Geno’s Jaw Breakers were both no shows as well, but they appeared to have their presets arranged, taking A.J. Green and Rob Gronkowski and at their picks of 5 and 6.
It was a good day for running backs, as besides Peterson and Gurley, 6 more ball carriers had their name called in the final 10 picks of the opening round. First came Eddie Lacy being picked by The Dawg Pound at 7 and quickly followed by Jamaal Charles going to The Eagle has landed at 8. The Northern ‘Fins went against the grain, drafting Allen Robinson at 9th overall, but the expansion Who Dats went right back to the half-back list, picking up LeSean McCoy at 10th overall. Motor City, Arizona, and Steel Curtain all went after running backs as well, selecting DeMarco Murray, Doug Martin, and C.J. Anderson at picks number 12, 14, and 16, with 1 Eye Til I Die being the only team to buck that trend when they selected WR Allen Hurns at the lucky 13 spot.
Cam Newton was the first QB off the board – and the only one in the first round – when SF’s BowMen drafted him at 11th overall, and Birds of Prey closed out Round 1, by taking the only defender when they selected Aaron Donald with the 16th pick overall, hoping he’ll help lead them this season to a fourth title.
The last player picked in a draft is often referred to as Mr Irrelevant, and last year’s final pick was just that. Aaron Dobson was the final player selected in last year’s draft by 1 Eye Til I Die, and he went on to score only 17 fantasy points – all year! The same fate may very well befall this year’s Mr Irrelevant, Patriot Linebacker Dont’a Hightower, selected with the final pick by BIGDOGINTEX, but the last round pick that got everyone’s attention was when the Arizona Firebirds selected running back Marshawn Lynch with pick #211, their final selection of 2016. Arizona’s stated reasoning was that since he’s not technically retired, might as well draft and stash just in case. If Lynch winds up being activated this season, the Firebirds will have landed the draft steal of the century.
