AFFL2023 Season Update #001

April Fools Day is right around the corner, and that means the start of the 2023 season for us fantasy fools.  This will be our fifth season – that’s really, really hard to believe, man, where did the time go?

Here’s the year’s first quick update in advance of opening day:

  • Competition Committee – I STILL need 4 volunteers for this season’s Comp Committee.  if your willing to take a turn, please email me
  • League Calendar
    • I’ve updated the League Calendar….mostly the same, just extended some of the time periods and gave it a new format
    • here’s the link <League Calendarl>
    • there’s also two buttons for it on the AFFL League Page; the “Calendar Sheet” button gives you the full spreadsheet, the “Calendar Page” button gives you an AF page with the calendar embedded in it
  • 2023 League Dues
    • 2023 Dues are $60 as usual, I’ve just opened the LeagueSafe Account
    • Here’s the link <LeagueSafe-AFFL2023>
    • Link is also in a button on the AFFL League page
    • First Deadline is April 30
    • After April 30, if you have not payed, but plan to return, please get with me.  otherwise i will start shopping your team around for a new owner (speaking of which…didn’t someone email me about the Bandits?)
    • Final Deadline is May 31, which will be the end of the Spring Signing Period;  You cannot submit any contracts or contract adjustments before paying entry fees, so that’s your deadline to pay and still get your player ‘paperwork’ done before the auction
    • As always, get with me if you need to for any reason
  • Contract Rules
    • I’ve updated the Contract Rules page
    • These rules are not yet ‘locked’ as i’m still waiting on our 2023 Comp Comt to look at a few things
    • There are a few rules changes and updates here and there (green text as usual), but mainly, I went through them line by line, rewriting things in as simple a way as I could, then reorganized it a bunch.
    • Then I added a bunch of color coded formatting that should make them MUCH easier to read/use/understand, etc
    • Also, the Franchise Tag Section has been moved to the League Rules page. My plan is to work on those this offseason as well to get them better organized and more user friendly with color coding and more simplified language
    • Go and check them out (if you haven’t already) as you start thinking about plans for the Spring Signing Period
  • Contracts
    • When I first set up the spreadsheet with our contracts – the Contract Data Sheet (version 1.0)  I intended it to just cycle to the next year…
    • But at the end of our first season with contracts, my prototype design wasn’t meeting the needs…..
    • So, i rebuilt from scratch and that gave us last season’s contract Data Sheet (2.0) and the new Team Data Sheet
    • With that second generation, I built in a few links for the data between the sheets, and some built in formulas to make it easier for me to manage and to keep it more accurate…..
    • Well, after a season with that one….it helped me a bit, but i had some ideas to improve on both of the above…..
    • So I started rebuilding a version 3.0……..this one turned into one of those projects that just kept getting bigger and bigger and…..
    • Massive would not be an understatement for this spreadsheet I’m building…it’s got a ton of hidden formulas and switches and conditional formating to make virtually everything automated when I just make simple updates
    • I’ll; devote a complete update to it…..once it’s done….
    • Which is the downside of all of this….It’s NOT DONE yet
    • it’s mostly done, but I’ve still got to work out some bugs in some of the formulas.  IT WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE DONE for April 1.
    • I AM shooting to have the new League Contract Data page done by around the 1st (so you’ll be able to see your updated contract info there) but the individual team pages likely won’t be done for another week or so beyond that…..
    • but, fingers crossed, I’ve got some extra time next week, I might be able to blow through it
  • Next Steps for 2023
    • Next on my list is to finish this Contract Database, and then I’ll release the 2023 League Data Sheet
    • Next after that, I’ll get the Team Data Sheets done
    • Then I’ll get the MFL page updates done for 2023
    • And then, I have to build an add on to the new Contract Database to handle dead money
    • And once I’m done with that, I’ll be able to update 2023 dead money and start accepting contract submissions, extensions, restructures, etc…….maybe around the 3rd week of April, but hopefully earlier
    • Meanwhile, once i release the new Data Sheet with updated contract info, I’ll start taking emails with specific contract questions, etc while I’m still working on getting all the other stuff done
  • 2023 Rules Updates on the Agenda
    • Contract Rules are updated (as noted above) and awaiting some possible revisions by the comp Comt ( you can see those in pink on the Contract Rules page)
    • FB position is being eliminated, and offensive starting line-up is returning to normal (nobody used it so W)
    • Bench/Roster size will be reviewed by comp comt – Starting Line-up expected to remain the same – sans FB
    • Taxi Rules will be simplified and Active Taxi will be both simplified and made a little more affordable….and Taxi Roster will possibly be expanded…just a little
    • There’s a couple of IR rules I have planned i think everyone will like….well, 1 IR rule, and possibly another that involves IR in a way you’ll like
    • Here’s the big one nobody will like….I’m going to have the comp comt look at possibly lowering the cut cap……right now it’s 50% of salary cap, and I plan on looking at dropping it to 45 or 40%…….for reference, that would be in the neighborhood of $20-$40ish M…..so it likely translates a player or two that each team won’t be able to keep…..which should make the draft a little more valuable
    • If you want a say in any of these rules changes, you could always email me to volunteer for the Comp Comt
    • Also, if you have any rules ideas or rules you want addressed specifically, you can email me and volunteer for the Comp comt…well, technically, you could just email me to suggest it and I’ll pass it on to the eventual committee…but it’s a lot more efficient the other way around.

I think that’s it for now…..it’s enough, don’t you think?  I’ll update soon – within 2 weeks – once I have the contract Database up and running.
