WORLD LEAGUE – The Old England Patriots suffered an upset loss 72-95 vs City of Champions to fall to 6-2 on the season. They’ll still retain their spot as league #1 but the real stories of the week were the record setting performances by the Scandinavian Stars and Dacusville Devils; the Stars destroyed New Orleans 140-62 and the Devils won their match 146-94 against Dublin Bay. The pair of scores were high enough to make it onto the league’s all-time single game performance list at #12 and #8 and serve well to build the hype as these two teams will face each other head-to-head in Week 9.
The Devils push their record to 6-2 with the win over what was the #2 team in the league. Not only does the victory tighten their grip on the Western Conference, but also moves them up into #2 overall in the league, besides Scandinavia next week, Dacusville is set to play #1 Old England in Week 10 which looks to be the match-up of the season.
The 2015 defending Champion Los Angeles Dragons picked off their third win in a row, beating Jerusalem 98-85 and have now climbed from the basement into second in conference and 4th in the league, but they have the toughest remaining schedule of any World League team, facing the league #1 and #5, and then the #3 twice. With their surprise win over Old England, and with New Orleans and Buenos Aires both losing last week, those 3 teams are now locked into a 4-4 standings tie and look like they’ll be battling each other to grab a Wild Card spot.
The Stars’ record setting day, combined with Dublin Bay’s loss to the Devils allows Scandinavia to leapfrog the Prawns and take over second place in the Eastern Conference, well within striking distance of the Patriots. Those two teams are playing the best of the west next week, as, besides the Stars’ match-up with the Devils, it’ll also be Dublin Bay taking on Los Angeles in Week 9. The two matches will likely have major playoff seeding implications. Old England gets a much lighter workload when they take on New Orleans and have a chance to extend their Conference lead. 2015 league runner-up London has finally stopped their losing streak, but will need a strong end-run to get themselves relevant for the post season, while Barcelona has just been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention while still searching for their first win.
