Firebirds Barely Escape Black Hole
The Arizona Firebirds narrowly pulled off a victory, 199-181 against 1 Eye Til I Die in the Week 6 Game of the Week. Despite playing at Bye Week strength, Oakland made it a battle that was much closer than the experts had predicted. Arizona advances to 5-1, but has no room to let off the pedal – BowMen and the Super Chargers posted matching 211 point lopsided victories over the Dawg Pound and the Big Dogs, and along with 1 Eye, the whole Division is right on their feathered tail at 4-2.
Birds of Prey survived their closest game yet this season, squeaking by the rival Who Dats 178-173 to extend their record win-streak to 13 games. The 5 point win is so close, that Thursday stat corrections could very well reverse it, giving the Who Dats a win they’ll celebrate more than a championship. If the win stands, though, it will leave New Orleans at 2-4, with BIGDOG and H-Town – who lost to the Fins – behind them at 1-5, with little chance that any of them will catch the Birds for the Division.
The Ice Cold Bruschis have been quietly doing nothing but winning all season, and they did it again in week 6, trampling the Indy-structibles 189-146. Undefeated at 6-0, and having outscored the Birds of Prey by 100 points on the season, the league could be headed toward a rematch of Super Bowl I. The Eagle has landed came from behind to win a tight one vs Geno’s Jawbreakers 203-183, but at 3-3, they’re still 3 games back from the Bruschis. The Jawbreakers fall to 2-4, still ahead of the Northern Fins who despite their victory over the Foster Kids are also still just 2-4.
The once powerhouse North Division has descended into mediocrity as the Dawg Pound falls to 3-3 with their loss to the Bowmen, and Indy drops to 2-4 courtesy of the Bruschis. Motor City is just below them, also at 2-4 as they fall victem to the BEARMINATORS who grab their first win of the season, in a 181-176 victory. That win, like the NOLA-ATL match, is so close that stat corrections could reverse it which would leave our defending champs still winless.
Week 7 Game of the Week candidates:
Ice Cold Bruschis vs Geno’s Jawbreakers – this is a ‘double-divisional’ SimulPlay match featuring the #1 Bruschis and a Jawbreaker squad that is better than their record (#6 in overall scoring) Will the Bruschis stay undefeated, or can the Gang Green give them loss number 1?
Los Angeles Super Chargers vs 1 Eye Til I Die – Another SimulPLay match featuring the #5 vs #6 overall teams – both 4-2 – in the hotly contested West Divsision race
Karma and a Kicker Who Dats vs Birds of Prey – the black and gold get another shot at ending their rival’s win streak in a rare back-to-back instant rematch…..If a stat correction reverse the Birds’ week 6 win, the revenge story will be on the other talon.
