Top Flight: Week 1 in the Super 16

S16 logo 2015The Birds of Prey didn’t waste any time reminding the league that they are still the team to beat, putting on a show in a MNF SimulPlay game, dominating a promising Eagle Has Landed team and capturing the high score of the week.  Their 226-155 victory wasn’t far off from the margin of victory the Vegas oddsmakers had predicted and puts the rest of the S16 on notice that after coming up just short of a 3-peat last season, they are out for that 3rd ring in 2015.  The victory means they start off, once again, in control of the South Division, and The Eagle falls behind early in an East Division where every game is likely to matter this year.

The other two SimulPlay games were also high-scoring, one-sided affairs full of West Division storylines.  The S16’s Birds of the West – the Arizona Firebirds decimated Karma and a Kicker’s Who Dats – with help from her own kicker in a 202-121 rout that leaves the Saints in last place in the South.  Despite the lopsided victory, the Firebirds finish the week no better than 3rd in the West Division, as the other SimulPlay match saw the LA Super Chargers put up 221 points in their league debut against the Motor City Kitties – formerly the West Division Rams – in their Detroit opener.  The Super Chargers take control of second in the division as The Expansion Bow Men out performed both LA and Arizona, embarassing the West Division’s 3rd expansion team 1 Eye Til I Die 213-97 and will start Week 2 first in division and 3rd overall.
In North Division action, The Dawg Pound faced bitter rival Indy, coming out on top 184-121 to take control of the division.  The Dawgs start the season as the only unbeaten out of the North, as defending champion BEARMINATORS fell to a rising Northern ‘Fins team 185-152.  The win puts the Fins in a tight 2nd place behind the Bruschis who held on to win a neck-and-neck battle with their division rival the relocated Jaw Breakers.

The final game of the week was an opening week Battle of Texas, that was close till the end, with H-Town coming out on top 187-175 to take over second place in the South. Week 2 gives them a chance to take over as they have a HUGE match against division rivals Birds of Prey.  It’s the only division game of the week.

Two of four teams starting out 0-1 will have a chance to even their record as Geno’s Jaw Breakers face BIGDOGINTEX and the Who Dats take on the Motor City Kitties, and the losers will back themselves into a corner to start 0-2.
Each coming off big opening wins from either coast, the Los Angeles Super Chargers will play a high octane Bruschi squad, and, also going coast to coast, the new Raider franchise will have to beat a dangerous Northern Fins team to turn their season around.
In the week’s only SimulPlay match, the defending champ BEARMINATORS face a tough match-up in the Firebirds if they want to keep the North Division from slipping away, and likewise so will the Indy-structibles as they face a powerhouse Bow Men.  The Dawgs can hold control of the north if they can keep grounded an Eagle squad reeling from their week 1 loss.
