Aztecs off To First Ever 3-0 Start

WORLD LEAGUE – for the second time in two weeks the Mexico Aztecs have been featured in the World League’s Premier Match of the Week, and for the second time in a row, they walk away victorious, this time 86-65 as they survived a Monday Night comeback attempt by the Dublin Bay Prawns.  The 65 points was 12th of 12 in the WFL for week 3, and a big disappointment for the Prawns who led the league in scoring coming into the match.  Mexico, on the otherhand, had no trouble putting up points in this one, riding their deadly Melvin Gordon-Ezekiel Elliot combo to victory, as Aztec runningbacks accounting for 40% of their score.  The victory ties the franchises up with 3 wins each in their all-time series, and sets up the Aztecs, now 3-0-0, with the best start they’ve ever had in the league.

Dublin Bay will retain their spot as first overall in the Eastern Conference though as the league’s two winningest franchises and 2017’s Eastern Conference finalists both fell in upset matches.  The perrenial powerhouse Old England almost pulled off an upset against 2018 surprise juggernaut City of Champions, but could not quite get there as they lose 97-91, while the defending World Champion Scandinavia Stars was absolutely routed by Cali, 116-82.  Both the Patriots and Stars now fall to 1-2 to start the season, while Dublin advances to 2-1-0, joined by the Jerusalem Cheeseheads who pulled out a 108-102 win in a tough battle with the Buenos Aires Blue Dogs.  

 

Youngstown quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambles away from a Milan defender Sunday. The mafia’s rookie phenom is currently third in the WFL in scoring, and has done so well for Youngstown that they have benched their veteran signal caller Tom Brady in favor of the rookie.

London Falling made it into the league record book in week 3 on the strength of their 153-77 slaying of the Thunderbirds.  The score places at 8th all time on the league’s Single Game Scoring Record, but unfortunatley for the Falling, they scored just 137 combined in their previous two outings, both losses, and the performance marked just their first win of 2018.  They are currently mired with the pack, in 4th place in the East.  In the Western Conference, though, WFL rookie Youngstown Mafia is still undefeated after beating Milan 106-80.  Youngstown’s 3-0-0 record ties Mexico, and thanks to a 3 point advantage leaves them ranked #1 in the league at this early point of the season.   The Aztecs will be on the road in week 4, visiting the struggling Scandinavian Stars while Youngstown will get their biggest test of the season as the Dublin Bay Prawns go to Ohio to try to put their week 3 loss behind them.
