WORLD LEAGUE – The Stars were shining bright in the World League‘s Week 9 Premier Match, featuring an encore of 2016’s World Bowl 5, and this time, there was a very different outcome. The AF#14 Scandinavian Stars have been nearly unstoppable this season, coming into the game with a 7-1-0 record and the World League total points lead, while the defending Champion Dacusville sits 6th in scoring with a 4-4-0 record, but the Devils were nontheless, ranked #2 in the Western Conference and ready to defend their title. Scandinavia went ahead early in this rematch, but the Devils kept pace with them through most of the day, and even appeared as if they were about to take the lead at one point, late in the day on Sunday, but the Stars held onto a one touchdown advantage going into Monday Night Football. There, in the Week 9 finale, Scandinavia put the game away, scoring 10 points to Dacusville’s 2 under the lights on Monday night for a 77-60 victory. Scandinavia have now beaten the Devils in 4 of 6 meetings.
The win bumps the Stars up to an impressive 8-1-0 record and 4 straight wins, but with just 4 weeks remaining in the regular season, Scandinavia cannot yet punch their playoff ticket while the Eastern Conference teams chasing them keep posting wins as well. The Old England Patriots sit in the #2 spot, and remain just one game back from Scandinavia with a 7-2-0 record after beating New Orleans this week, 77-71, for their 49th win in team history. They’ll be searching for historic win Number 50 next week against either a demoralized or fired up Dacausville franchise. The Jerusalem Cheeseheads become the third Eastern team in a row to beat Buenos Aires, who at one point this season, led the league in scoring. Jerusalem did it with an 81-64 score and betters their record to 6-3-0, sliding up into the Conference #3 spot after London Falls to Mexico, 84-126 and drops to 5-4-0.
The win over London, makes over 250 points in scoring over just the past two weeks for the Mexico Aztecs who seem to be getting hot. They sport a 6-4-0 record after the Week 9 victory, and are #1 in the Western Conference, the only team in the West, in fact, with a record over .500 . In Week 10, they’ll take on Jerusalem who have now strung 3 consecutive wins together, averaging 87 points per game in those three wins. The rest of the Western Conference is mired in mediocrity, and with one more win, Mexico will begin looking at scenarios that’ll clinch a first round playoff bye.
